One way to ensure the longest possible lifespan for your HVAC system is to have seasonal maintenance done to maximize efficiency and lifespan. Another is to install a system that is known to outlast every other: a geothermal heat pump.

Geothermal heat pumps, also known as ground-source heat pumps, are more expensive than traditional air-source heat pumps, but they are the hands-down most energy-efficient and longest-lasting home comfort systems on the market. This is because they use the relatively constant temperature of the earth as the basis for their refrigeration cycle, rather than the fluctuating temperature of the air outside.

How Does Geothermal Technology Work?

The refrigerant lines are buried deep underground, where the soil temperature is always around 60 degrees. If the air outside is 97 degrees, it will take a lot of energy to cool it down to 70; it takes significantly less energy to heat the 60-degree ground temperature up to 70, which is passed on in the form of lower energy bills. In fact, by switching to a geothermal heat pump, you could see your heating and cooling costs fall by as much as 70 percent!

Additionally, because the geothermal heat pump’s refrigerant lines are underground, they’re a lot less susceptible to damage, which translates to fewer repairs and longer operating life. A well-maintained ground-source heat pump can last up to 50 years!

Is Geothermal Right For You?

A geothermal heat pump system is an investment in energy-efficiency and long-term comfort. If you need to replace your air conditioning system and are looking for something that will stand the test of time and be worth the investment, you should consider ground-source heating.
