Heating System Alternatives in Florida
Most homes in the Gulf Coast region are heated and cooled using a heat pump which usually includes a strip heater (electric resistance heat) for emergency use if the compressor fails.
Some homes have a gas furnace which can be efficient depending on your situation and the size of the house.
What is a Heat Pump?
Heat pump systems can be an ideal solution for Sarasota and Bradenton homeowners because they are energy efficient and function best in above-freezing temperatures. Basically a heat pump, as part of a central heating and cooling system, uses the outside air to both heat a home in winter and cool it in summer.
Installation for this type of system typically consists of two parts: an indoor unit called an air handler (or fan coil unit) and an outdoor unit (or compressor). The difference between an air conditioner and a heat pump is that a heat pump can both heat and cool your home. Either way the heat pump is circulating a refrigerant between the indoor and outdoor units to exchange heat in one direction or the other. Heat pumps are very efficient.
The advantages of modern, high SEER rating heat pumps include energy efficiency, quiet operation, the ability to be a dehumidifier when in cooling mode, versatile comfort and convenient operation, consistent temperatures, zoning capabilities and more.
